At least four people have died and around 100 others are missing after flash floods and a landslide struck the mountainous state of Uttarakhand on Tuesday (August 5).

The calamity followed a suspected cloudburst in Uttarkashi district, unleashing a powerful surge of water that tore through Dharali village, a well-known tourist destination dotted with hotels and scenic spots.

A massive flash flood hit Dharali around 1:45 pm, just 4 km from the Indian Army camp in Harsil, cutting off all road access to the sacred Gangotri Dham. The sudden deluge of water and debris caused extensive destruction, triggering a large-scale emergency response from multiple agencies.

Two Indian scholars won a $200,000 settlement in the US after facing racial discrimination over the smell of palak paneer in a university microwave. The case highlighted "olfactory racism" and institutional bias, with both scholars leaving their PhD program due to retaliation and loss of academic support. The university settled without admitting liability, granting degrees but barring the scholars from future association with the institution.
