The British broadcaster and naturalist, Sir David Attenborough was forced to cancel his tour to Australia after his cardiologist advised him to insert a pacemaker immediately.

The veteran broadcaster is expected to undergo the heart surgery in London today.

Attenborough expressed “extreme disappointment” at the sudden cancellation of the sold-out speaking tour titled Sir David Attenborough - A Life on Earth, due to start in Brisbane and the continue to Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, reported The Guardian.

The 87-year-old, who has been described by many as a national treasure has said he has no intention to retire. He was also named among the 100 Greatest Britons in a voting contest conducted in UK.

Attenborough is best known for presenting the Life series with the BBC Natural History Unit. He worked as a senior manager at the BBC at one time and served as controller of BBC Two and director of programming for BBC Television in the 1960s and 1970s.

He is the only person to have won a BAFTA in black and white, colour, HD and 3D.

The organisers of the trip are trying to reschedule his visit.
