The cyber landscape in India has seen a dramatic surge in criminal activities, with a staggering 31% increase in cybercrime incidents reported between 2020 and 2022. According to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its report “Crime in India,” the numbers paint a concerning picture of the nation’s digital security. The report reveals a worrying trend across various states and union territories, showcasing a relentless rise in cyber offenses. From the bustling streets of Delhi to the serene landscapes of Kerala, no region seems immune to the onslaught of cyber threats. Key findings from the report indicate that while Andhra Pradesh witnessed a 24% spike in cybercrime cases, states like Telangana experienced an alarming 204% surge during the same period. Smaller states like Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur also grapple with an uptick in cyber incidents, albeit on a smaller scale. Arunachal Pradesh saw a fluctuation in cases, with a notable increase from 30 in 2020 to 47 in 2021, followed by a significant drop to 14 in 2022. Similarly, Manipur witnessed fluctuations, with 79 cases reported in 2020, dropping to 67 in 2021, and further plummeting to 18 in 2022. Uttar Pradesh too saw a decrease of about 8.83% in cybercrimes from 2020 to 2022. States like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu emerged as cybercrime hotspots, with substantial increases in reported incidents. Maharashtra recorded a steady rise from 5,496 cases in 2020 to 8,249 cases in 2022, reflecting a 50% increase over the two-year period. Similarly, Tamil Nadu witnessed a sharp surge from 782 cases in 2020 to 2,082 cases in 2022, indicating a pressing need for strengthened cybersecurity measures in these densely populated regions. Delhi, meanwhile, demonstrated exponential growth. The national capital reported a staggering 307% increase in cyber incidents from 168 cases in 2020 to 685 cases in 2022, underscoring the urgent need for robust cybersecurity infrastructure and awareness campaigns in metropolitan areas. To combat this escalating menace, the Central Government has been proactive in fortifying its cyber defense mechanisms. The establishment of the ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre’ (I4C) and the deployment of Joint Cyber Coordination Teams (JCCTs) in cyber crime hotspots exemplify the government’s commitment to tackling cyber threats head-on. Furthermore, initiatives like the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, and the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting System serve as vital pillars in the fight against cybercrime. These platforms, as per the government, will not only empower citizens to report cyber offenses but will also equip law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools to investigate and prosecute cybercriminals effectively. In addition to bolstering infrastructure and technology, the government has prioritised cyber awareness and education. Through initiatives like the ‘CyTrain’ portal and cyber hygiene training programs, thousands of officials and NCC cadets have been equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital landscape safely. Despite these concerted efforts, the battle against cybercrime remains ongoing. CERT-In’s continuous issuance of alerts and advisories underscores the ever-evolving nature of cyber threats, requiring constant vigilance and adaptation. As India navigates the digital age, securing its cyber borders becomes paramount. With collaborative efforts between government agencies, law enforcement, and vigilant citizens, the nation can strive towards a safer and more secure cyber environment for all, said
