As India celebrated its 78th Independence Day on Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took to X to congratulate the people of India and expressed confidence that both the countries together will achieve greater heights.

“On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, I would like to express my heartfelt wishes to the people of India, and especially to the many Indians who follow this page,” she posted on X along with a picture of her with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She said that Italy and India share an ever-stronger bond.

"…I am confident that together we will achieve great things. Our strategic partnership is an important pillar for the future," she added.

PM Modi met with Italian Prime Minister Meloni during the G7 Summit in May.

He traveled to Italy at Meloni’s invitation to attend the G7 Outreach summit, marking his first foreign trip since starting his third term as prime minister earlier this month.

“Prime Minister Meloni’s two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth in our bilateral agenda,” PM Modi had said.

“We remain committed to consolidate the India-Italy strategic partnership, and bolster cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions,” he said.

During the summit, a selfie and a video of PM Modi and PM Meloni went viral on social media. In the picture, the Italian PM and Prime Minister Modi can be seen smiling. In the video, they can be seen waving at the camera with PM Meloni saying “Hello from the Melodi team”

Earlier in the day, several leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin, greeted India’s leadership and the people of India on the occasion.

While most of the leaders from the South Asian neighbouring countries invoked enduring friendship rooted in history and strengthening of bilateral relations when they greeted their counterparts, presidents and prime ministers from other regions spoke about strategic ties and regional ethos.

In his message on X, Macron said, “Congratulations to the Indian people on your 78th Independence Day! I remember your warm welcome during my visit to India in January and look forward to working with my friend @NarendraModi on achieving the ambitious goals we have set for our strategic partnership.”

“We attach great importance to the relations of a particularly privileged strategic partnership with India. I am confident that the consistent implementation of the agreements reached following our recent talks in Moscow will contribute to the further development of multifaceted Russian-Indian cooperation, said Putin in a message addressed to President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi .
