China's Middle East envoy discusses Israel war with Arab League leaders in 'emergency meeting'

China’s Middle East envoy met senior members of the Arab League in China in an emergency meeting to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a statement by the Chinese foreign ministry said on Saturday. As per the statement, Zhai Jun said that Beijing supports the Arab League which is playing an important role in the “Palestinian issue” and that it will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinians. “The international community should earnestly enhance its sense of urgency to return to the correct basis of the two-state solution to realise the peaceful coexistence of the two states of Palestine and Israel,” Zhai said, according to the statement. Meanwhile, Israelis expressed “deep disappointment” with China’s statements concerning Hamas’ assault on southern Israel. The deputy director for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Rafi Harpaz emphasised that the messages from China have “no clear and unambiguous condemnation of the terrible attack and heinous massacre committed by the terrorist organisation Hamas against innocent civilians and the abduction of dozens of them to Gaza.”
