China remains top military, cyber threat to United States, intelligence report finds

China remains the United States’ top military and cyber threat, according to a report by U.S. intelligence agencies published on Tuesday.

According to the Annual Threat Assessment by the U.S. intelligence community, China can strike the US with conventional weapons, disrupt critical infrastructure through cyberattacks, and target American assets in space. The report also states that Beijing aims to surpass the U.S. as the leading power in artificial intelligence by 2030.

The report stated that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is developing a joint force capable of full-spectrum warfare to counter U.S. intervention in regional conflicts, project global power, and secure Beijing’s territorial claims.

Beijing is expected to intensify coercive pressure against Taiwan, particularly in response to perceived increases in U.S. support for the island, with a stronger push toward unification in 2025. The report also noted that China will continue applying economic pressure on Taipei and could escalate its actions if Taiwan moves toward formal independence.

Beyond China, the report identified Russia, Iran, and North Korea as nations seeking to challenge the U.S. through deliberate strategic campaigns. It pointed out that Moscow’s war in Ukraine has provided Russia with valuable insights into combating Western weapons and intelligence in large-scale warfare, the report said.
