Facebook’s decision to buy mobile messaging service WhatsApp broke the tech acquisition records by a whopping $6.5 billion — the previous major deal being Google buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion.
Facebook decided to fork out $19 billion for the hugely popular WhatsApp — putting to an end months of speculation about the deal. Facebook paid $4 billion in cash and approximately $12 billion worth in shares. Add another $3 billion in restricted stock units to WhatsApp’s founders to get your grand total.
If you put the deal in perspective — it has cost Facebook more to buy just an app than what Google paid for a whole company.
As for ads, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “We need to concentrate on growth and we believe we can help out WhatsApp with growth. Personally I don’t think ads are the right step to go for monetising messaging app.”
Below is a chart of the most expensive tech acquisitions ever.
