Canada designates Lawrence Bishnoi gang as 'terrorist entity' under Criminal Code

Canada on Monday officially designated the Lawrence Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity under its Criminal Code, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced.

The designation means the gang is now legally defined as a “terrorist group” in Canada. “A terrorist listing means anything owned by that group in Canada — property, vehicles, money — can be frozen or seized and gives Canadian law enforcement more tools to prosecute terrorist offences, including those related to financing, travel and recruitment,” the government said.

According to officials, the Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal group operating mainly out of India, with a presence in Canada and activities in diaspora-heavy areas. “The Bishnoi Gang engages in murder, shootings and arson, and generates terror through extortion and intimidation.

They create a climate of insecurity in these communities by targeting them, their prominent community members, businesses, and cultural figures,” the government statement said.

In a post on X, Anandasangaree wrote, “Today, our government listed the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity. Violence, terror, and the intimidation of communities will never be tolerated in Canada.”

The gang, named after its leader Lawrence Bishnoi, has been linked to extortion, smuggling, and multiple murders in India and abroad, drawing growing international scrutiny in recent years.
