Breaking News Live Updates: Cyclone Montha hits Andhra coast, one dead, schools shut amid heavy rain

Gaza’s civil defence agency said on Wednesday that overnight Israeli airstrikes killed at least 50 people across the Palestinian territory, following an attack that left one Israeli soldier dead.

Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal condemned the strikes as “a clear and flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement.” Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, speaking during his visit to Asia, maintained that “nothing” would threaten the truce he helped broker.

Hadush Kebatu, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenager in Epping, has been deported to Ethiopia, the UK Home Office confirmed on Wednesday. He was mistakenly released from prison in what appeared to be “human error”, Justice Secretary David Lammy said.

He was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford on Friday, sparking a 48-hour manhunt that ended with his re-arrest in north London on Sunday.

At least five Palestinians were killed after an Israeli airstrike struck a tent housing displaced civilians in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, a source at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital told Al Jazeera.

The victims were among families who had sought refuge in makeshift shelters amid ongoing Israeli bombardment across the enclave. Local health officials said rescue efforts were underway as the situation in central Gaza remains dire.

Floods caused by record-breaking rainfall have killed at least nine people and left five others missing in central Vietnam, the government said on Wednesday.

Six of the victims were reported in Danang and the nearby ancient town of Hoi An, both popular tourist destinations. According to the government’s disaster agency, over 103,000 homes, mostly in Hue and Hoi An, have been inundated.

Both the Nepali and Chinese sides of the Everest region were closed to tourists on Wednesday following unseasonal heavy snowfall, as a helicopter crashed while attempting to rescue stranded trekkers.

The Everest region, which attracts thousands of climbers and hikers each year, has been blanketed in snow since Monday after a cyclone from the Bay of Bengal brought severe weather across India. Nepali authorities have suspended trekking on several routes, warning against travel in the Annapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri regions due to rain in lower areas and deep snow at higher altitudes.

Cyclone Montha battered the Rajolu island region of Andhra Pradesh, bringing strong winds and tidal waves that breached coastal defences and flooded several villages.

Seawater entered Palepalem under Antarvedi limits, inundating homes and streets, while similar flooding was reported in Karavaka and Gogannamatham. Trees and electric poles were uprooted in multiple areas as heavy rains continued to lash the coast.

Hurricane Melissa strengthened to a category 4 storm while moving over the Caribbean Sea toward eastern Cuba, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

After briefly weakening to a category 3 while crossing Jamaica, the storm intensified again over open waters. “Melissa is expected to remain a powerful hurricane when it moves across Cuba, the Bahamas, and near Bermuda,” the NHC said in its latest advisory.
