The Israeli military announced that a 37-year-old soldier was killed in combat in the southern Gaza Strip.

In a brief statement, the army said the soldier’s family had been informed before the news was made public but did not provide further details about the timing or circumstances of the incident.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 storm, a day after striking Jamaica at Category 5 intensity, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Floods caused by record-breaking rainfall have killed at least nine people and left five others missing in central Vietnam, the government said on Wednesday.

Six of the victims were reported in Danang and the nearby ancient town of Hoi An, both popular tourist destinations. According to the government’s disaster agency, over 103,000 homes, mostly in Hue and Hoi An, have been inundated.

Both the Nepali and Chinese sides of the Everest region were closed to tourists on Wednesday following unseasonal heavy snowfall, as a helicopter crashed while attempting to rescue stranded trekkers.

The Everest region, which attracts thousands of climbers and hikers each year, has been blanketed in snow since Monday after a cyclone from the Bay of Bengal brought severe weather across India. Nepali authorities have suspended trekking on several routes, warning against travel in the Annapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri regions due to rain in lower areas and deep snow at higher altitudes.

Cyclone Montha battered the Rajolu island region of Andhra Pradesh, bringing strong winds and tidal waves that breached coastal defences and flooded several villages.

Seawater entered Palepalem under Antarvedi limits, inundating homes and streets, while similar flooding was reported in Karavaka and Gogannamatham. Trees and electric poles were uprooted in multiple areas as heavy rains continued to lash the coast.

Hurricane Melissa strengthened to a category 4 storm while moving over the Caribbean Sea toward eastern Cuba, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

After briefly weakening to a category 3 while crossing Jamaica, the storm intensified again over open waters. “Melissa is expected to remain a powerful hurricane when it moves across Cuba, the Bahamas, and near Bermuda,” the NHC said in its latest advisory.
