Bondi beach 'hero' faces possible arm amputation after severe blood loss

In the wake of the tragic Bondi Beach shooting in Sydney, one man’s bravery has captured global attention, and left him fighting for his life. Ahmed al Ahmed, the bystander who tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the attack, might lose his arm after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, his lawyer has revealed.

Ahmed is currently recovering in hospital after undergoing his first surgery, but his condition “is a lot worse than expected,” Sam Issa, his migration lawyer, told The Age.

Doctors are now concerned that the injuries to Ahmed’s left arm—where he was hit by several bullets—could be so severe that amputation might be necessary. The lawyer added that the wounds have caused Ahmed to lose “a lot of blood”, a situation that was far more serious than anyone had anticipated.

Yet despite his critical condition, Ahmed’s spirit appears unbroken. When asked about his actions during the terrifying shooting that unfolded at the beach, Issa said Ahmed made his feelings clear: “He doesn’t regret what he did. He said he would do it again.”

Video footage and eyewitness accounts show Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and a local resident, sprinting toward the chaos as gunfire erupted during a crowded public event. He dove toward one of the assailants, wrestled the rifle away from him, and subdued him, undoubtedly saving many lives in the process.

Australian PM pays a visit

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has since visited Ahmed at St George Hospital in Sydney and praised his actions as “an example of the best of humanity,” underscoring the widespread admiration for his courage.
