Former US President Joe Biden reportedly recieves the largest taxpayer-funded pension in American history, surpassing even the standard presidential salary of $400,000 a year. His estimated annual payout of about $417,000 makes this record-breaking package bigger than what he earned while serving as president.
Demian Brady, vice president of the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, told the New York Post that the size of Biden’s pension is “historically unusual” because no other former president has received such a large retirement payment.
Why Biden’s pension is so high
What’s driving this unusually large pension is Biden’s long career in public service. Having spent decades in the US Senate, served as vice president, and then as president, Biden qualifies for retirement benefits from multiple government systems. Experts say this lets him draw from both the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and the pension provided under the Former Presidents Act of 1958, stacking benefits in a way few others have been able to.
That combination has pushed his annual pension above the salaries and retirement benefits of previous presidents, including Barack Obama, whose pension was about half what Biden will receive after his own White House tenure.
More than just a pension
It’s worth noting the total retirement support for former presidents goes beyond just the pension check. Under current laws, ex-presidents also receive taxpayer-funded benefits such as office space, staff support, travel allowances and security, which add significant value to the overall retirement package.
Some analysts and taxpayer advocacy groups have raised questions about the fairness and sustainability of such generous retirement benefits, especially when they exceed what sitting presidents earn. Proposed reforms—including pension caps and reduced perks—have been floated by lawmakers but not yet enacted.
