US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a telephonic conversation, during which the two leaders discussed the developments in Gaza as well as “ongoing efforts to locate and secure the release of hostages” including American citizens which are believed to be held by Hamas. As per the statement released by the White House, both the leaders also reviewed ongoing discussions to ensure safe passage for foreign nationals wishing to depart Gaza as soon as possible. “The President discussed ongoing US support for the continuous flow of humanitarian support to the civilian population in Gaza and welcomed efforts to increase this support over the coming period,” the White House said. During his conversation with Netanyahu, Biden reiterated that Israel has every right and responsibility to defend its citizens from terrorism and to do so in a manner consistent with international humanitarian law. The statement said Biden also “noted the importance of focusing on what comes after this crisis to include a pathway for a permanent peace between Israelis and Palestinians, emphasising that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations.” Also, during their conversation, Biden and Netanyahu agreed to remain in regular consultation both directly and through their respective national security teams. The telephonic conversation came on the 19th day of the Israel-Hamas war. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, according to Israeli officials, mostly civilians who died in the initial Hamas rampage. On Wednesday, Israel’s military raised the number of remaining hostages in Gaza to 222 people, including foreigners believed captured by Hamas during the incursion. Four hostages have been released. Meanwhile, Hamas-run Health Ministry Wednesday said at least 6,546 Palestinians have been killed and 17,439 others wounded. With inputs from agencies
