People taking selfies at tourist locations is a common sight but it landed a couple of tourists in Italy in deep trouble after their selfie attempt damaged a centuries old statue of Hercules.
Two tourists in northern Italy involuntarily broke off a piece of the priceless statue of Hercules, which dates back to 1700, while trying to climb it to take a selfie.
According to The Daily Mail , the ‘Statue of the two Hercules’, in Cremona is regarded as a symbol of the city. It depicts two figures of Hercules, the city’s mythical founder, holding the emblem of Cremona.
The tourists, whose identities have not been revealed, broke off a piece of the marble crown on top of the monument while trying to climb the statute on Friday night.
The perpetrators have been identified by the police, The Local reported.
Situated under the portico of the 13th century Loggia dei Militi, the monument was completed in 1700 and the statue was originally placed on top of the city gates before being moved to its current location in 1962.
Technicians have since visited the site to assess the damage caused to the statue and determine whether it can be repaired.
