Amid ongoing anti-India campaign in the country, Bangladesh has suspended visa services in Delhi till further notice.

All consular services and visa operations at the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi and the Assistant High Commission in Tripura’s Agartala have been suspended till further notice, according to Dhaka Tribune.

The newspaper reported that a senior official from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the suspension on Monday evening.

The official reason for the suspension of services are protests against the lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in the ongoing wave of political violence in Bangladesh. But, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), protests in India did not affect Bangladesh’s mission in any manner.

On the other hand, Indian mission in Bangladesh’s Chattogram was attacked with stones in the presence of police. Visuals of the attack have also surfaced that are in sharp contrast with the protest in New Delhi that involved 20-25 people merely raising slogans.

Since the news of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in last year’s movement that ousted then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, broke last week, Bangladesh has currently in the grips of widespread violence and an anti-India campaign. Mobs have intensified the targeting of Indian missions that had begun shortly after Hadi was shot in Dhaka earlier this month.

Following the targeting of Assistant Indian High Commission in Chattogram, India on Sunday suspended consular services there till further notice.

Previously, India had similarly suspended visa services in Dhaka over targeting of the Indian High Commission, but services were later resumed.

For these multiple acts of violence, the Bangladeshi authorities have not yet taken any action except for saying that they have identified three persons involved in the attack on the Indian mission in Chattogram.

In a statement, interim ruler Muhammad Yunus’ office said that “three individuals who attempted to create disorder near the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chattogram have been identified based on video footage”.
