Hours after overthrowing longtime Bangladeshi ruler Sheikh Hasina on Monday, protestors were seen toppling the statue of her father Sheikh Mujibur-Rehman.

After weeks of mass movement in Bangladesh, which led to the deadliest day in years yesterday as nearly 100 people were killed, Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Monday and fled the country for her life. After a stop-over in India, she is expected to depart to London to live out her remaining days in self-exile as her political career stands finished.

After looting her official residence and storming the parliament, agitators were seen bringing down Mujibur’s statue, the man hailed for a long time as the Father of the Nation in Bangladesh as he was the foremost leader of the nation’s war of liberation against Pakistan which led a genocidal campaign in the country until 1971 when pro-independence forces with India’s assistance freed the country from Pakistan’s rule.

The video in which protesters are seeing trying to bring down Mujibur’s statue is reported to be from Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.

The scene of the protesters bringing down the statue was eerily similar to the scene in Baghdad after opponents brought down dictator Saddam Hussein’s statue after the US-led invasion brought an end to his reign in Iraq.

In Bangladesh, student protests against job quota system turned into a mass movement against Hasina’s 15-year reign as the Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami joined ranks. After Hasina deployed police and military crush the movement, the movement rose in strength and after the Bangladesh Army sided with the protesters over the weekend, Hasina resigned as Monday and that brought an unceremonious end to her 15-year reign.
