One person was killed and several were injured in an attack on the Bangladesh Air Force base at Cox’s Bazaar in the south of the country.

Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin told The Business Standard, “One person has been killed and several others injured in the incident. The cause of the clash will be investigated through discussions with both parties, and necessary measures will be taken.”

Separately, Bangladesh’s military public relations wing said that the air force base at Cox’s Bazar had come under a sudden attack by a group of miscreants from the nearby Samitipara locality earlier in the day, according to The Daily Star newspaper.

The newspaper reported Cox’s Bazar’s Sadar Hospital’s Dr Sabuktagin Mahmud Shohel as saying that the deceased was aged around 25 and was “brought dead” to the hospital. He further said that the deceased had deep injuries at the back of his head. The family of the deceased identified him as Shihab Kabir Nahid.

The incident happened hours after Bangladesh’s interim ruler Muhammed Yunus’ interior affairs chief, Lieutenant General (Retired) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, accused supporters of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina’s supporters of fomenting violence in the country. In a pre-dawn press conference, he said that Hasina’s supporters were trying to destabilise the country and vowed they “will in no way be spared”.

“We will ensure that terrorists cannot stand anywhere and prevent crimes at any cost,” said Chowdhury.
