US President Donald Trump once again refused to accept that he lost the 2020 US elections to former president Joe Biden as he sat down with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral talks in the White House. On Thursday, Trump welcomed the Indian leader, who is on a two-day visit to the United States, describing him as a “longtime friend”.
When asked if the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had any role in election interference during the 2020 presidential race, Trump said that “bad things happened” that year. “It (USAID) could’ve had a role, there were a lot of bad things that happened in 2020. I think bad things happened in 2024 as well, but it was too big to rig,” Trump told the media as he sat down with the prime minister.
“We won by a tremendous margin (in 2024), we won every swing state, we won the popular vote by millions of votes, so it was too big to rig. But I think they probably tried. We are looking to go for a system now which is much different, where one-day voting, voter IDs and paper ballots and when they do that, we are going to clean it up very very well,” he furthered.
Trump claims his 2020 election performance was better than what he did in 2016
During the presser, the POTUS went on to claim that his 2020 performance was much better than 2016, pushing the same rhetoric of denying his loss to Biden. “We had a great 2016, we had a much better 2020 elections but bad things happened,” he averred.
Getting back to how monumental his 2024 win was, Trump emphasised that his recent electoral victory gives him “a chance to work with the prime minister,” assuring that India and the US would have great relations together. Soon after losing the 2020 race to Biden, Trump has constantly claimed that the polls were rigged and he actually won the race. His frequent denial of the election results and his provocative remarks over the matter led to the January 6 Capitol Riots.
In January 2021, several Trump supporters stormed into Capitol Hill while former Vice President Mike Pence was certifying Biden’s win. On the first day after returning to the office, Trump went on to pardon several people who were incarcerated for their involvement in the riots. The move was seen as controversial since many claimed that the rioters unleashed violence against US lawmakers and US law enforcement officers.
