Nine people, including seven students, have died after a school came under attack in the Austrian city of Graz. Citing local police, Austrian state media ORF said several people had been seriously injured in a shooting incident.
The local media said that the shooting happened in the Dreierschützengasse high school and that gunshots were heard inside the school building. The ORF report also said that the gunman is believed to have killed himself after the shooting.
Graz’s Mayor Elke Kahr has said that nine people, including the gunman, have died in the mishap.
Meanwhile, the BBC has quoted local reports saying that eight people have lost their lives in the attack, with several others, including students and teachers, seriously injured.
Located in the northwest of Graz, the site where the shooting occurred is not far from the main central train station. Local media reported that injured students were being treated at the nearby Helmut List Hall, an events venue situated close to the school.
Austria’s interior ministry has confirmed that there have been several casualties, including a suspected gunman. Police operation in the school to evacuate staff and students is underway.
The police have deployed their specialist Cobra tactical unit, which deals with attacks and hostage situations, to get to the bottom of the incident. A disaster alert has also been sent to nearby hospitals as the number of injured increases.
The government has responded to the shooting, with Chancellor Christian Stocker cancelling his scheduled appointments for the day. The interior minister is reportedly en route to Graz.
