At least 25 people died after a fire broke out in China’s southeastern Jiangxi province, the local government said on Wednesday. A fire broke out in the basement of a shopping area at 15:24 on Wednesday, said officials for the Yushui district of Jiangxi province, adding that 120 rescue, firefighters, police and local government officials were deployed to the scene. Video footage released by CCTV showed several fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles lined up across the street from a row of businesses. The local government said search and rescue operations are underway, and that the cause of the fire is under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the accident. The incident comes just five days after a late-evening blaze at a school in central China’s Henan province killed 13.
