Assured they won't return to India, Italian marines are "finally happy"

One of the two Italian marines, charged with shooting and killing two Indian fishermen, has said that they were “finally happy” after the Italian government informed India that the soldiers would not be returning to face trial. “I thank the president of the republic, all institutions, the government and the Italian people who have always supported us with a great number of postcards that never made us feel alone,” Latorre told Italian news agency ANSA in an interview. “I also thank all those who have supported us through social networks,” he was quoted as saying. The Supreme Court of India had allowed the marines to return home after an undertaking by the government of Italy, according to an advocate who spoke to the media. The Italian foreign ministry said yesterday that the duo would not return since India had not responded to Italian requests to seek a diplomatic solution to the case. There was now a formal dispute between the two countries over the terms of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, the Italian foreign ministry said.
