Even as the Bangladeshi regime has revoked former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s passport, India has extended her visa, according to a report.
The development comes at a time when the interim regime in Bangladesh headed by Mohammed Yunus, propped by the demonstrating mobs and military that came together to oust Hasina last year, has sought her extradition from India.
As part of the new regime’s crackdown on Hasina and her Bangladesh Awam Party (BAL), it has issued arrest warrants against her and senior officials in her administration. The warrant as well as the extradition request are essentially symbolic as the Indian government is unlikely to hand over Hasina.
In this context, the Hindustan Times has reported that India has paved way for Hasina to continue to stay in India by extending her visa.
People aware of the matter told HT that the claim that India has provided Hasina asylum is not true and she is staying in the country normally. They highlighted that India cannot grant her asylum because India has no asylum policy and hence there exists no system of granting asylum to anyone.
They said that the extension of Hasina’s visa happened through regular channels, which is the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
As for the extradition request, they told the newspaper that Yunus’ regime did not complete key formalities and therefore the Indian government is unlikely to respond to the demand.
Even as the Yunus’ regime has sought Hasina’s extradition, it has also proposed to come to India to interrogate her. Majer General (Retired) ALM Fazlur Rahman told BSS news agency that investigators would want to come to India to “interrogate” Hasina in a purported case related to the killings of 74 persons in 2009.
Rahman said, “For the purpose of the investigation, the commission will go to India and interrogate Sheikh Hasina if the [Bangladesh] government gives us permission.”
