On Thursday, the former Duke of York, Andrew, was under arrest for 11 hours over suspicion of misconduct while serving in a public office. Shortly after his arrest, British monarch King Charles III made a statement stating, The authorities have “our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” it read, and “the law must take its course.”

Andrew was arrested while he was at a private estate, the monarch owns – Sandringham, north of London. Andrew’s arrest was significant because the last time a member of the royal family was detained was in the 17th century. Hence, a brief 100-word statement by King Charles III shocked many. “My family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all,” the British monarch furthered.

Many saw the remarks as the King distancing himself from his disgraced brother. Interestingly, Charles’ tactics in dealing with the unfolding allegations around Andrew were vastly different from the approach taken by Queen Elizabeth II.

How the royals took a different tone this time

It is pertient to note that Andrew was reportedly Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite son, and critics have previously said she did not act quickly enough to hold Mountbatten-Windsor to account for the repercussions of his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Many even questioned why the former British monarch allowed him to use Buckingham Palace as the location of his disastrous 2019 BBC interview in which he tried to bat away allegations of wrongdoing. Some also asked why the late Queen reportedly provided Andrew with millions to settle the civil sexual assault lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre in 2021, who died by suicide in 2025.

King Charles III, on the other hand, has been more decisive in dealing with his brother since coming to the throne in 2022. He stripped his brother of “prince” status and evicted him from the royal estate in October. A royal source told CNN that neither King Charles nor the palace was given advanced warning of Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest. Hence, many now believe that Charles is likely to maintain distance from Andrew as the former Duke of York continues to face legal scrutiny.

Who are the Kurds, who could lead the next phase of Iran war?

Iran's Kurds, many in exile in Iraq, are preparing for possible cross-border operations against Iran with potential US backing amid ongoing US and Israeli strikes. All major Kurdish opposition groups have formed a coalition aiming to overthrow Iran's Islamic Republic and seek Kurdish self-determination. Kurds, a large ethnic group without a state, see the current conflict as a chance to advance their long-standing goal of an independent homeland despite past US betrayals.
