From Russia’s war in Ukraine to the conflict in West Asia, Brics leaders discussed it all.

Here are the most important things to need to know about the 134-pointer Kazan Declaration:

  • Brics has reaffirmed its commitment to improving global governance by making international systems more flexible, effective, efficient, responsive, representative, legitimate, democratic, and accountable. It also stresses the need for more meaningful participation of emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs) and least developed countries, especially in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, in global decision-making

  • Taking an apparent dig at sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russia and China, the group expressed “deep concern” about the disruptive effect of unlawful unilateral coercive measures, including illegal sanctions, on the world economy, international trade, and the achievement of sustainable development goals

  • Brics has reaffirmed the importance of biodiversity conservation, including the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

  • The group of nations also mourns the loss of civilians in conflict-ridden regions of West Asia and Africa as it expresses concerns about the growing tensions and calls for urgent measures, per international law, to ensure the protection of lives

  • Brics has called for the implementation of UNSC resolutions 2712 (2023), 2720 (2024), 2728 (2024) and 2735 (2024) in response to its denouncing of Israeli attacks against humanitarian operations, facilities, personnel and distribution points in Gaza

  • It stresses the relevance of the principle “African solutions to African problems” and says that it should be the basis of resolving conflict in the continent. While doing so, Brics also conveyed its apprehension over the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Sudan

  • Recalling the significant potential of Brics countries in the field of nuclear medicine, Brics has welcomed the decision to establish a Brics Working Group on Nuclear Medicine. It has launched the first-ever Brics Health Journal and the creation of the Brics Medical Association
