At least 35 people were killed and seven others injured on Wednesday in a catastrophic road accident along a treacherous mountain route in Yemen’s southern Abyan province, according to a Gulf News report, citing officials and local sources.
Sana bin Dhiban, deputy head of Yemen’s Land Transport Authority in Aden, told Reuters that the incident took place on Al Arqoub mountain road when a passenger bus carrying dozens of travellers returning from Saudi Arabia collided with another vehicle.
Local sources said both vehicles caught fire following the collision, burning completely and leaving most victims charred beyond recognition. Three people in the second vehicle also perished in the blaze.
Only seven passengers reportedly survived by smashing the bus windows and leaping out amid the flames. Emergency teams were dispatched to assist the wounded and recover the bodies.
Preliminary reports suggest the accident was caused by excessive speed and brake failure in both vehicles, leading to a direct head-on collision.
Videos circulating on social media showed plumes of fire and thick smoke rising from the wreckage of the bus and car. The incident is believed to be Yemen’s deadliest traffic accident in recent years and marks the third major crash in less than a month.
Yemen has long been ranked among countries with the highest rates of traffic accidents, a situation attributed to poor road conditions, limited enforcement of safety regulations, and vehicle maintenance issues.
