Three employees of Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, the country’s highest government body, were killed in a car crash on Sunday, near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Qatar’s embassy in Egypt said in a statement posted on X. The embassy confirmed that two other passengers were injured and were receiving medical care at a local hospital. The bodies of the deceased and the injured were to be repatriated to Doha later on Sunday.
Two Egyptian security sources told Reuters that the vehicle, carrying Qatari diplomats, overturned on a curve about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh. The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed.
Gaza Peace Summit
The crash occurred just days after officials from Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt took part in indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, which resulted in an agreement between Israel and Hamas on the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
The Egyptian city is set to host a major international summit on Monday, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and President Trump. According to a statement issued on Saturday, leaders from more than 20 countries will attend the gathering aimed at ending the war in Gaza and promoting peace and stability in the West Asia. The summit aligns with Trump’s broader vision for global conflict resolution and regional security.
