Former US President Donald Trump is set to unveil his running mate at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Monday.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said that he would announce his vice presidential running mate today.

The news channel further reported that the top candidates to be Trump’s running mate are Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, and Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota.

Trump is set to be formally anointed as the presidential nominee of the Republican Party at the RNC in Milwaukee. The convention comes just two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt that has led to an upswing of sympathy and has further bolstered his standing in the presidential election against President Joe Biden — embattled over questions over his physical and mental capacity to be president.

For months, Trump has been the presumptive Republican nominee since Nikki Haley, the last major candidate opposing Trump, withdrew from the race. Then, weeks later, she endorsed him after bitterly contesting his candidacy for months.

In most of the polls in recent weeks, as has been the case for much of the campaign, Trump has commanded a comfortable lead over Biden.

Even though Trump has been convicted in the ‘hush money’ case, he has been bolstered by a couple of rulings lately. Earlier this month, the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump has immunity for acts done in the course of his official duty. Then, earlier today, a judge dismissed the case related to the possession of classified documents.

Trump and his supporters have long said that he is the subject of political witch-hunt. The two rulings, coupled with a surge in sympathy following the assassination attempt and rising frustration with Biden’s frailty and failure to inspire confidence about his capacity to lead, Trump finds himself in a strong position four months ahead of election.
