The Liberal Democrats have recorded the best electoral performance in a century in the 2024 UK general elections.

As per the latest tally by Sky News, the Lib Dems have won 64 seats and are continuing to march ahead.

The exit polls had projected that the Lib Dems will win 61 of the 650 seats in the UK general elections, but the party has gone beyond with 64 seats. This is a huge leap from the previous elections in 2019 when the Lib Dems won just 11 seats.

Even as the Labour Party has made most of the headlines for winning a landslide victory, the Lib Dems have mounted one of the biggest upsets. The Lib Dems' Jess Brown-Fuller defeated the Conservative MP and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan in Chichester , a Conservative Party’s stronghold for the past 100 years.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said the party was on its way to have the best results in a century.

“The Liberal Democrats are on course for our best results in a century, thanks to our positive campaign with health and care at its heart. I am humbled by the millions of people who backed us to both kick the Conservatives out of power and deliver the change our country needs,” said Davey.

Every Liberal Democrat MP will be a strong local champion for their community standing up for the NHS and care.

Whether you voted for us or not, we will work day in and day out and we will not let you down.

The Lib Dems party was formed in 1988 and has consistently come third in the British elections after the Conservatives and the Liberal. During 2010-15, the Lib Dems were a junior partner of the Conservatives in the government.

The previous best performance of the Lib Dems was in 2005 when they won 62 seats.

Even though the Lib Dems was formed in 1988, the Liberal Party from which it traces its roots has been around in different forms for around 150 years. In 1988, after the Liberals had long lost popular support, the party joined ranks with Social Democratic Party (SDP), a splinter of the Labour Party, to form the Lib Dems party.
