At least two people were killed after two planes collided mid-air in southern Arizona near the Marana Regional Airport on Wednesday, news agency AP reported, citing authorities.

The incident occurred after an American Airlines plane crashed mid-air with a military Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, DC, in late January, making it the worst plane disaster since 9/11 in 2001.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it is investigating the collision near an airport on the outskirts of Tucson.

The NTSB stated that a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II, both fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft, had two passengers each aboard when they collided at Marana Regional Airport, northwest of Tucson.

The Marana Police Department confirmed two deaths after the collision. It stated that the planes crashed mid-air at Marana Regional Airport, located near Avra Valley.

A series of aviation disaster in US

The disaster comes days after a series of plane accidents in the United States. There have been four major aviation disasters in North America in the last month,

the most recent involving a Delta jet that flipped onto its roof while landing in Toronto and the deadly crash of a commuter plane in Alaska.

Last week, one of two pilots died on a private jet owned by Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil after the aircraft veered off a runway in Arizona and hit a business jet.

Just a day later, a medical transport jet carrying a child patient, her mother, and four others crashed into a Philadelphia neighbourhood on 31 January, exploding into a fireball that engulfed several homes. That crash killed seven people, including all those aboard, and injured 19 others.
