The international campaign for the recognition of Palestinian statehood has been reinvigorated by Israel’s war in Gaza following the October 7 onslaught.
Breaking with the long-held belief of Western powers that Palestinians can only achieve statehood as part of a negotiated peace with Israel, Norway, Spain, and Ireland became the latest nations to recognize a state of Palestine on Tuesday.
Their action has angered Israel and increased the number of UN members that have recognized a Palestinian state to 145 out of 193.
They do not include the United States, Canada, much of western Europe, Australia, Japan, or South Korea, but they do include a large number of Middle Eastern, African, and Asian nations.
In order to thwart a Palestinian quest to join the UN as a full member state, the US exercised its veto power in the Security Council in April.
