Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kyiv, Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk has urged India to intensify its efforts as a representative of the Global South to facilitate a fair and enduring resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Born in 1963, Ukraine’s ambassador to India Oleksandr Polishchuk began his military career as a cadet at the Kyiv Higher Military Command School in 1980. He graduated from the Kyiv Higher All-Military Command School in 1984 and the Academy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1996.

Military service: Polishchuk served in various command, staff positions and General Staff within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and Ministry of Defense from 1984 to 2010. He retired as a Major-General.

Post-military career: After retirement, he took on senior civil service roles in the Ministry of Defense and the Ukraine National Security and Defense Council. He also worked as a state expert and headed departments within the Council.

National Security and Defense Council: From 2014 to 2017, he held senior positions in the National Security and Defense Council.

Non-governmental and academic roles: From 2018 to 2019, Polishchuk was involved in expert analytical work for a non-governmental organization and conducted scientific research at the National Institute for Strategic Studies.

Deputy Minister of Defense: From October 2019 to July 2023, he served as Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine and chaired the Interagency Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation and Export Control**.**

Tripartite Contact Group: He was a member of the Ukrainian delegation in the Trilateral Contact Group and represented Ukraine in the working subgroup on security issues from 2020 to 2022.

NATO Mission: From 2004 to 2007, Polishchuk served as Deputy Military Representative of the Ukrainian Mission to NATO**.**

Ambassador to India: Appointed by the President of Ukraine in June 2023, Polishchuk is currently the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of India.
