At least ten firefighters have been killed in an Israeli strike in south Lebanon, Lebanon’s health ministry said on Monday.
“An Israeli strike overnight targeted a local firefighting centre in Baraasheet where 10 civil defence members were present,” municipal official Reda Ashour said.
The health ministry reported the “killing of 10 firefighters” who were “in the building ready to go out on rescue missions”, adding efforts to remove the rubble were ongoing.
At least 1,400 people in Lebanon, including Hezbollah fighters and civilians, have been killed since Israel greatly expanded its strikes in that country in late September.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military said that Lebanese armed group Hezbollah had fired some 135 projectiles into Israel on Monday, as the country marked the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack.
“As of 17:00 (14:00 GMT Monday), approximately 135 projectiles fired by the Hezbollah terrorist organisation crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory,” the military said in a statement, as air raid sirens sounded frequently across northern Israel.
