Over a million people have been forced to leave the Gazan city of Rafah, according to a report released on Monday by the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA).

Approximately one million Palestinians who were displaced by Israeli attacks on other areas of the enclave sought refuge in the small city on the southern border of the Gaza Strip, according to humanitarian organizations.

Israel’s military has been conducting what it claims is a limited operation in Rafah since the beginning of May in order to drive out Hamas militants and destroy infrastructure utilized by the militant Palestinian Islamist organization that controls Gaza.

The Israeli military has instructed residents to relocate to a 20 km (12 mile) “extended humanitarian zone.”

Moving up and down the Gaza Strip in recent months, many Palestinians have lamented that they are constantly at risk of Israeli bombardment.

In the city of Khan Younis, thousands of people are currently taking refuge in buildings that have been damaged or destroyed, according to UNRWA, which is still managing to provide basic services in spite of “increasing challenges”.
