World Tourism Day 2024: 10 tips to be a good tourist

Respect the locals The place you are visiting is somebody’s home. So, respect the people and be mindful of their culture. This includes understanding dress codes, appropriate behaviour in religious or sacred sites, and dining etiquette.

Learn basics of local language Even simple phrases like ‘hello,’ ‘please,’ and ‘thank you’ in the local language can go a long way in showing respect and building rapport.

Be culturally sensitive Be aware of the difference between appreciation and appropriating cultural symbols, clothing or practices. Dress modestly and behave appropriately when visiting religious sites.

Be a slow tourist One of the best ways to enjoy a trip is to stay at a destination longer rather than destination hopping in a limited time. Rather than just visiting the cities, it is advisable to explore the countryside as well.

Be flexible and open-minded Be patient and adaptable to the local way of life, which may be slower or different from what you are used to. Keep in mind to try new foods, activities and experiences that are unique to the destination.

Give back If you wish to contribute to the community, donate to reputable local charities or initiatives rather than giving money directly to individuals, which can sometimes cause harm.

Share your experiences responsibly Share your experiences in a way that encourages others to travel responsibly and sustainably. Provide constructive feedback that can help future travellers and local businesses improve.

Be environmentally conscious One of the ways to be mindful of the environment is by minimising your use of single-use plastics while carrying reusable items like water bottles, shopping bags and utensils.

Avoid travelling in large groups It is better to travel in small groups as the larger ones tend to be noisy and create confusion. It is also easier for you to travel in small groups as you can have an authentic experience.

Be mindful of activities that harm animals Animal exploitation is real and we often unknowingly become a part of it by opting for activities like visiting a tiger farm to take selfies. Instead you can visit a conservative park.
