Diwali 2025: 10 tips to keep your pets safe and sound during the festival
Create a calm space
Set up a quiet and comfortable room where your pet can retreat during fireworks. Include familiar toys, bedding, and water to help reduce anxiety and noise stress.
Avoid fireworks exposure
Keep pets indoors during fireworks. Loud sounds can frighten them, leading to panic or escape attempts. Close windows and play soothing music to mask the noise.
Use pet identification
Ensure your pet wears a collar with an updated ID tag and microchip. If they run away in fear, this helps reunite you quickly and safely.
Skip the sweets
Avoid giving pets Diwali sweets or snacks. Chocolates, nuts, and artificial sweeteners are toxic to animals. Stick to their regular diet or safe and vet-approved treats.
Keep diyas and candles away
Place diyas, candles, and incense out of your pet’s reach. Curious cats and dogs can knock them over, risking burns or accidental fires.
Avoid decorative hazards
Keep tinsel, rangoli powder, and small decor items away from pets. They may chew or swallow them, leading to choking, poisoning, or digestive issues.
Exercise before celebrations
Take your dog for a long walk or play session earlier in the day. Tired pets are less likely to react anxiously to loud sounds later.
Stay calm yourself
Pets sense your emotions. Stay relaxed and positive during fireworks as your calm demeanour helps reassure them that there’s nothing to fear.
Consult a veterinarian
If your pet is highly anxious, consult your vet about safe calming aids or medications suitable for Diwali’s loud and festive environment.
Educate guests
Inform visitors not to offer food or startle pets with noise. Remind them to keep doors closed to prevent pets from slipping out during celebrations.
