Mumbai’s second airport to open September-end: Here are 9 features to watch out for

Twin-airport system Mumbai is awaiting the opening and operation of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) by the end of September 2025. It is designed as part of a twin-airport system alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

20 million passengers Terminal 1 at the new airport is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually and serve both domestic and international flights

Dual parallel runways Two runways, spaced 1.55 km apart, are a great feature that will enable simultaneous takeoffs and landings while boosting traffic capacity and reducing delays.

Massive area and cargo facilities NMIA sits over approximately 1,160 hectares, with dedicated domestic and international cargo buildings. First phase cargo capacity will have approx. 0.8 million tonnes/year.

General aviation and VVIP facilities The airport aims to have a huge general aviation terminal with more than 67 aircraft stands, a heliport, and hangars. VVIP and defence aprons linked by a “Code E” taxiway to handle large aircraft like B747 and A380.

Smart, green design The airport will have a lotus-inspired architecture by Zaha Hadid. It will have solar, rainwater harvesting, energy efficiency, EV charging, along with modern baggage handling and biometric systems planned.

Multimodal connectivity The airport will be well-connected via roads like NH 4B, Sion-Panvel highway, Atal Setu, rail like Targhar station, multiple metro lines, future water taxi and hovercraft links.

Passenger experience and technology The airport will have thorough check-in, security with 3D CTX baggage scanners, a focus on quick turnaround for low-cost carriers, and touchless/biometric controls.
