Indian pariah dog
The most common stray breed, Indian pariahs are hardy, intelligent, and adaptable. They have short coats, pointed ears, curled tails, and are among the oldest known indigenous dog breeds.
Rajapalayam
Often spotted in southern India, some abandoned Rajapalayams live as strays. Known for white coats, lean muscular build, and loyalty, they were once royal hunting dogs but now roam cities.
Kombai
Originating from Tamil Nadu, Kombais are strong guard dogs. Though rarer today, abandoned ones can be found as strays. They are muscular, alert, protective, and deeply tied to village traditions.
Mudhol hound
A sighthound from Karnataka, Mudhols are tall, slender, and graceful. Some neglected or abandoned ones survive as strays. They are fast runners with sharp vision, valued in hunting and guarding.
Rampur greyhound
Native to Uttar Pradesh, Rampur Greyhounds are sleek, strong, and agile dogs. Some strays descend from neglected breeds. They are excellent runners, with elongated bodies, sharp eyesight, and calm temperaments.
Gaddi kutta
From Himachal Pradesh, Gaddi kuttas are mountain dogs bred by shepherds. Occasionally found as strays in hill towns, they are powerful, protective, thick-coated, and resilient to cold Himalayan climates.
Bakharwal dog
Originating in Jammu and Kashmir, Bakharwals are guardian dogs of nomadic tribes. Strays occasionally exist near settlements. They have fluffy coats, immense strength, and unmatched loyalty, suited for mountainous terrains.
Tangkhul hui
An indigenous dog from Manipur, Tangkhul Hui is small, energetic, and protective. Some live as strays in the northeast. They’re rare but culturally significant companions of tribal households.
Pandikona
From Andhra Pradesh, Pandikonas are natural guard dogs with fearless temperaments. Many roam villages freely as semi-stray dogs. Medium-sized, strong, and territorial, they’re highly protective of their human communities.
Jonangi
A rare coastal breed from Andhra Pradesh, Jonangis are short-coated, athletic, and excellent hunters. Though declining, some live as strays near fishing villages. They’re loyal, energetic, and deeply tied to tradition.
