Japan to Deploy Missiles on Island Near Taiwan, China Blocks "Dual-Use" Exports | Spotlight

Tensions between Tokyo and Beijing have reached a critical flashpoint following Japan's announcement to deploy surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island by March 2031. Located just 110 kilometres from Taiwan, the move is bound to infuriate China, which views the self-ruled island as its own territory. The diplomatic rift deepened in November after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested potential military intervention if Taiwan was attacked. In retaliation, China has launched a multi-pronged pressure campaign, including restricting dual-use exports to 20 Japanese firms and, reportedly, suspending seafood imports. The spat has also bled into culture and tourism; Chinese visitor numbers plummeted by 61% in January, and the symbolic return of Japan’s last two pandas signalled a breakdown in "panda diplomacy."
