Reports: Somalia’s Mohamud Seeks Turkish Troops, Plans to Impose Emergency | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Türkiye for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan amid escalating threats from Al-Shabaab. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding counter-terrorism cooperation, and finalising a major defence pact. Reports suggest Türkiye may deploy elite special forces to Somalia and establish a joint military base in the Middle Shabelle region. Türkiye, which already operates its largest overseas base in Mogadishu, has trained Somali soldiers since 2017 and supplied advanced military equipment, including Bayraktar drones and T129 ATAK helicopters. Meanwhile, Mohamud may reportedly declare a state of emergency upon his return. Türkiye’s growing role in Somalia is drawing scrutiny, particularly from the U.S., raising questions about shifting power dynamics in the Horn of Africa. Watch the video for more details.
