Peru was thrown into political chaos overnight as Congress voted to impeach President Dina Boluarte, one of the world's least popular leaders, and swiftly swore in José Jerí Oré, the 38-year-old head of Congress, as the new president. Lawmakers accused Boluarte of "moral incapacity" and failing to tackle Peru's spiralling crime crisis. She was removed in a midnight vote after skipping a summons to defend herself. Jerí, a conservative from the Somos Perú party, vowed to "declare war on criminal gangs" as he took the oath of office. His sudden rise makes him Peru's seventh president since 2016—and the country's latest hope amid deepening unrest.
