In Japan, a real-life horror story unfolded as thousands of venomous spiders were exterminated at the US Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, western Japan. Between July and October, officials captured over 3,500 spiders, including redbacks, black widows, and grey widows — many capable of laying hundreds of eggs. Experts believe the arachnids likely arrived on military aircraft from regions like the U.S. or Southeast Asia. This marks Japan’s latest battle against invasive species, following earlier infestations and rising threats from fire ants and raccoons. Authorities are now deploying sniffer beagles to detect foreign pests at ports, as experts warn that Japan’s struggle against these fast-spreading, venomous invaders is becoming increasingly difficult to contain.
