India’s big fat wedding culture has inspired a new Gen Z nightlife trend: the “fake wedding.” Across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, young people are now buying tickets—ranging from $15 to $1,500—to attend wedding-themed parties that feature music, dancing, ethnic outfits and lavish buffets, but no bride, groom or rituals. Event organisers say the concept began with young Indians abroad who recreated Bollywood-style celebrations for fun. Hotels and clubs are now cashing in as demand surges. Attendees can dance, sip quirky cocktails and pose for reels without the emotional baggage or gift-giving expectations of real weddings. With booming ticket sales, the trend is quickly shifting from novelty to a growing business model within India’s hospitality sector.
