Ukraine Courts Africa With Aid & Diplomacy To Counter Putin’s Influence | Firstpost Africa | N18G
Ukraine is not just fighting Russia on the battlefield, but also competing with it in Africa, a region where Moscow has long held influence. The West African nation of Mauritania is now home to a new Ukrainian embassy. It oversaw food aid deliveries to refugees from neighbouring Mali, said the aid officials. Ukraine is also reportedly offering to train Mauritanian soldiers. Ukraine’s proposal came amid tensions between Mauritania and Mali, which is getting support from the Russian forces. Ukraine's strategy to expand its footprint followed Russia's invasion in 2022. Ukraine is trying to strengthen trade and diplomatic ties with African nations. As opposed to Russia’s military-heavy approach, Ukraine is focusing on winning African allies with food supplies.
