In Uganda, an alleged crackdown on the opposition is continuing ahead of the elections next year. The country’s police have detained a senior official of Uganda's largest opposition party, National Unity Platform (NUP). According to the leader of opposition in the parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP’s deputy spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, was forced into a vehicle just outside a magistrate's court in the capital, Kampala. Ssenyonyi said that Mufumbiro was “violently grabbed” and “pushed into a minivan” and accused President Yoweri Museveni's government of “cowardice and criminality”. The NUP and other opposition parties have called out Museveni's government, citing an alleged campaign of abductions and torture by security forces. Meanwhile, Museveni has announced his bid to extend his 40-year rule. He will contest the upcoming election to seek a seventh term in office.
