Tanzania’s president has finally acknowledged that people were killed during the violent unrest that followed last month’s election, breaking weeks of public silence. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s near 98 per cent victory triggered accusations of rigging, arrests of opposition candidates and nationwide protests that turned deadly. Rights groups say hundreds were killed, though the government has yet to release figures.
