Tanzania’s president has finally acknowledged that people were killed during the violent unrest that followed last month’s election, breaking weeks of public silence. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s near 98 per cent victory triggered accusations of rigging, arrests of opposition candidates and nationwide protests that turned deadly. Rights groups say hundreds were killed, though the government has yet to release figures. Speaking before lawmakers, Hassan announced a national inquiry, promised reforms and urged leniency for young protestors charged with treason. But critics say crackdowns, intimidation, and abuses have continued under her watch. With pressure mounting from the UN and the US, Tanzania faces a test of its own democracy.
