Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized the strategic Heglig oilfield in Sudan's South Kordofan province, forcing the Sudanese Army and oil workers to withdraw. This takeover, near the border with South Sudan, is a significant blow, as Heglig houses the main oil processing facility for South Sudan, a vital revenue source for Juba. The seizure marks a major escalation in the brutal civil war that began in April 2023, which has already displaced 12 million people and devastated the nation. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's efforts to broker peace have struggled. His administration recently sanctioned a network accused of hiring former Colombian military personnel to fight for the RSF, which the US accuses of genocide. A recent peace plan proposed by the US, UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia was rejected by the Sudanese Army chief, who cited the UAE's alleged funding and arming of the RSF.
