South Sudan has announced that it has reached an agreement with warring parties in Sudan for it to secure the strategic Heglig oilfield in Kordofan near the border after the site was seized by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This critical site is vital for both nations, as it provides Sudan with foreign exchange and houses the main processing facility for landlocked South Sudan's oil exports, which constitute the bulk of its public revenues. This move is aimed at protecting the facility and mitigating the worsening economic crisis in South Sudan, caused by repeated disruptions to oil production. The larger conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, continues to rage, displacing millions and triggering famines.
