South Sudan's opposition has called for an armed mobilisation to overthrow President Salva Kiir's government. This comes after their leader, Riek Machar, was removed from the position of the country’s First Vice-President and charged with murder, treason, and crimes against humanity last week. Machar, from the Nuer ethnic group, has been accused of ordering a militia attack that killed over 250 soldiers in March. His party has denied the allegations, accusing the Kiir government of consolidating power illegally. The rivalry between Kiir and Machar, which stems from the 2013 civil war, threatens to undo the fragile 2018 peace deal. The postponement of elections to 2026 has further fuelled concerns of a return to a devastating conflict.
