Despite strong travel warnings from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada over violent crime, tourism in South Africa is surging. The country recorded around 10.5 million international visitors in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Tourism now contributes nearly 9 percent to GDP and supports up to 1.8 million jobs. Demand is driven by foreign tourists seeking safaris and wine tourism, helped by a weaker currency, along with strong domestic travel generating billions in spending. While crime remains high, tourist zones are often insulated with security. The result is a clear split: persistent risk on paper, but continued confidence from travellers on the ground.
