Archaeologists in Senegal have uncovered new evidence of the 1944 Thiaroye massacre, where French colonial troops killed West African soldiers demanding equal pay after serving in World War II. Excavations at the Thiaroye military cemetery near Dakar revealed seven skeletons showing bullet wounds, missing bones, and iron chains. Researchers say the graves were rearranged to conceal the atrocity, long hidden by destroyed colonial records. Findings submitted to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye describe the massacre as “premeditated.” The discovery comes a year after French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged the killings, as Senegal ends French troop presence and pledges further investigations.
